Best veel keuze heb je tegenwoordig als je menstruatieproducten gaat shoppen. Zijn al die producten voor iedereen geschikt? Nee. Hoe weet je wat bij jou past? Nou, check dit overzicht met plus- en minpunten. Alles wat je moet weten als het gaat om menstruatie management.

Inlegkruisje

Eigenlijk zijn inlegkruisjes bedoeld tegen vaginale afscheiding, maar ze zijn ook inzetbaar als je denkt dat je ongesteld gaat worden. Of als je daar bijna mee klaar bent, maar nog nadruppelt.
PLUS Ze zijn klein en dun. Je voelt ze nauwelijks. Door de plakstrip blijven ze goed op hun plaats zitten.
MIN Je moet ze weggooien, inlegkruisjes zijn in die zin dus belastend voor het milieu. Als je ze dagelijks draagt, kan dat huidirritaties geven. Vulva’s moeten kunnen ademen.

Menstruatiecup

Ze zien er soms wat intimiderend uit, die cupjes van medische siliconen. Maar als je ze goed vouwt, is inbrengen een eitje. Er is keuze uit een keur aan merken, maten en kleuren (foto hierboven: OrganiCup)
PLUS (Heb je even?) Je hebt er maar één nodig en die gaat soms wel 15 jaar mee. Omdat je ze inwendig draagt, zie je ze niet. Je kunt ze relatief lang inhouden (tot wel 12 uur). Doordat het menstruatiebloed niet wordt blootgesteld aan zuurstof worden geurtjes voorkomen. Ze zijn stukken vriendelijker voor het milieu en voor het budget, doordat je ze kunt hergebruiken. Je leert je lijf beter kennen en kunt je gezondheid beter monitoren omdat je ziet hoeveel bloed je verliest. Doordat ze het vocht niet absorberen, maar opvangen, drogen ze de vagina niet uit.
MIN De maat bepalen is bij sommige merken niet echt eenvoudig. Je moet er niet te preuts voor zijn. Het verwijderen van een erg vol cupje is een knoeiboel als je ongeoefend bent. Zeker op een openbare wc met een gedeelde wasbak. Let ook even goed op de kwaliteit. Er is veel goedkope rommel op de markt.

Wegwerp maandverband

Anatomisch gevormd, flinterdun, met of zonder zijvleugels, voor de dag of voor de nacht, met of zonder parfum, regulier of van biologisch katoen (foto boven: Natracare): de keuze is eindeloos.
PLUS Voor elke situatie is er wel een ideaal product. Door de plakstrip blijft het goed op zijn plaats. Modern maandverband is flinterdun en nagenoeg onzichtbaar en heeft een enorm absorptievermogen. Aan duurzaamheid wordt steeds meer aandacht besteed, ook reguliere merken bevatten tegenwoordig minder plastics.
MIN Je moet het product weggooien, daardoor is maandverband belastend voor het milieu. Door het plasticlaagje aan de onderkant kan een broeierig klimaat ontstaan wat infecties in de hand kan werken. Je moet maandverband geregeld verschonen liefst eens per 4 uur. Of meteen als je ’s ochtends opstaat na 8 uur slaap.

Menstruatiedisc

Deze variant op de menstruatiecup lijkt wel wat op een pessarium, al was dat een voorbehoedsmiddel en is de disc bedoeld als menstruatieproduct. Je hebt ze in verschillende maten, zoals de foto hierboven van Bamboozy laat zien.
PLUS De voordelen zijn gelijk aan die van de menstruatiecup. Met als bonus: doordat je ze hoger inbrengt – tegen de baarmoedermond – laten ze je vagina vrij. Je kunt er dus penis-in-vaginaseks mee hebben. Al is het wel slim de disc eerst even te legen. Voor het verwijderen hoef je – anders dan bij een menstruatiecup – geen vacuüm te verbreken.
MIN Je moet er dus niet te preuts voor zijn, omdat je met je vingers je vagina in moet als je de disc goed op zijn plaats wilt krijgen.

Wegwerp menstruatiecup

Er zijn ook menstruatiecups voor eenmalig gebruik. Ze lijken qua vormgeving op een herbruikbare menstruatiedisc, al is het materiaal wat krakerig en minder zacht.
PLUS Een wegwerp menstruatiecup (bijvoorbeeld de Easecup) is makkelijker in te brengen dan een menstruatiecup. Daarbij hebben ze als bonus dat je ze tijdens penis-in-vaginaseks kunt inhouden.
MIN Minpunt is dat ze voor een wegwerpproduct relatief duur zijn. Doordat je ze na gebruik weggooit, zijn ze belastend voor het milieu.

Tampliner

Dit innovatieve menstruatieproduct combineert een tampon met een soort inlegkruisje annex labiapad. Als je de tampon inbrengt, is je vinger beschermd door iets wat nog het meest op de vinger van een latex handschoen lijkt. De bijbehorende pad verdwijnt tussen je vulvalippen ofwel labia.
PLUS De Tampliner is ontwikkeld door een gynaecoloog en gemaakt uit onder meer biologisch katoen. Bij het verwijderen van de tampon verdwijnt deze in het biologische afbreekbare applicatorhoesje.
MIN Het is een wegwerpproduct. Je kunt ze vooralsnog alleen in de Britse webshop kopen.

Menstruatieondergoed

Slips met een vochtabsorberend kruisje zijn aan een enorme opmars bezig. Niet voor niets dat ook fabrikanten van wegwerpproducten – zoals Libresse – zich op deze markt storten. Je ziet broekjes in alle kleuren en varianten: als short, heupslip en als string. Er zijn zelfs broekjes speciaal voor tieners en speciale uitvoeringen voor sporten en zwemmen. Nieuw zijn ze niet: al in 1926 werd reclame gemaakt voor met rubber beklede menstruatiebroekjes voor ’s nachts. Die vertoonden verrassend veel overeenkomsten met luierbroekjes uit die tijd.
PLUS Aan de styling van de slips is het geheime wapen niet af te zien: een kruisje dat 2 tot 6 eetlepels vocht kan opvangen. Je hebt keuze uit verschillende modellen, voor lichte, medium en zware dagen. Combineren met andere producten kan, maar hoeft niet per se.
MIN Je moet ze wassen? Maar dat doe je met je gewone ondergoed hopelijk ook. Ook de aanschafprijs is overkomelijk als je bedenkt hoelang je ermee kunt doen.

Wegwerp tampon

Mini, normaal of super. Met of zonder inbrenghuls. De witte staafjes bestaan in allerlei soorten en maten. Ze zijn gemaakt van synthetisch materiaal (rayon) of van biologisch gecertificeerd katoen (bijvoorbeeld van Yoni). De absorptiegraad staat op de verpakking aangegeven door middel van druppels. Dit heeft niets te maken met de grootte van je vagina, maar refereert aan de hoeveelheid bloed die je verliest. Je kunt ze maximaal 8 uur inhouden.
PLUS Omdat je ze inwendig draagt, zie je ze niet. Los van het touwtje. Ze bieden optimale bewegingsvrijheid. Doordat het menstruatiebloed niet wordt blootgesteld aan zuurstof worden geurtjes voorkomen. Maar dat geldt voor alle inwendige producten.
MIN Je moet het product weggooien. Tampons zijn daardoor belastend voor het milieu. Tampons met inbrenghuls geven nog meer afval; of de inbrenghuls nu van plastic is of van karton, in beide gevallen verbruik je meer (verpakkings)materiaal.  Doordat tampons bloed absorberen en niet opvangen, kunnen ze je slijmvliezen irriteren.

Sponsje

Saunatampon, softtampon, sekstampon, touwloze tampon, tamponsponsje, Beppy: het zijn verschillende namen voor hetzelfde product. Sponsjes zijn gemaakt van flexibel, absorberend schuimmateriaal (zoals polyurethaan). Je draagt ze inwendig en kunt ze tot 8 uur inhouden.
PLUS Omdat je ze inwendig draagt en het touwtje ontbreekt, zie en voel je ze niet. Ideaal voor sporten, saunabezoek of vrijpartijen (sponsjes zijn uitgevonden in de seksindustrie).
MIN Sponsjes zijn prijziger dan reguliere tampons. Na gebruik gooi je ze weg (al zijn er mensen die ze uitkoken en hergebruiken). Doordat het touwtje ontbreekt, is verwijderen lastiger.

Wasbaar maandverband

Wasbaar maandverband is er in alle soorten en maten en met de meest maffe dessins. De pads zijn meestal voorzien van een waterafstotend laagje om doorlekken te voorkomen. Met drukknoopjes houd je het verbandje op zijn plaats. Het zal geen verrassing zijn dat er ook wasbare inlegkruisjes zijn en labialapjes die je tussen je vulvalippen draag om afscheiding op te vangen. PLUS Je hoeft maar één keer een voorraadje aan te schaffen omdat je ze hergebruikt. Dat is fijn voor het budget en voor het milieu. Mits gemaakt van het juiste materiaal (ongebleekt katoen) zijn ze vrij van toxische stoffen en bleekmiddelen. Ze zijn superzacht en geven doorgaans minder irritatie dan wegwerpverband.
MIN Dat je ze moet wassen? Doordat een plakstrip ontbreekt, kunnen ze soms iets verschuiven. Het absorptievermogen is minder dan bij ‘gewoon’ maandverband.

Wasbare tampon

Echt waar: er zijn ook wasbare tampons. Deze van ongebleekt katoen gehaakte lapjes met een touwtje eraan zijn kant-en-klaar te koop in diverse maten, maar een patroon bestellen en zelf haken kan ook. Je rolt ze op en brengt ze in zoals je dat normaal zou doen. De exemplaren op de foto hierboven zijn gemaakt van biologisch gecertificeerd katoen en komen uit de collectie van Imse Vimse.

PLUS Je hoeft ze maar één keer te kopen of te maken omdat je het hergebruikt. Dat is fijn voor het budget en voor het milieu. Mits gemaakt van het juiste materiaal (ongebleekt katoen) zijn ze vrij van toxische stoffen en bleekmiddelen.
MIN Je moet ze wassen. Het absorptievermogen is stukken minder dan dat van een gewone tampon. De materiaalkeuze is belangrijk. Als er vezels in je vagina achterblijven, kan dat infecties geven.

Zeesponsje

Zeesponsjes worden al sinds de oudheid inwendig als tampons gebruikt. Het zijn stukjes sponsdieren: primitieve, meercellige dieren die op de zeebodem leven. Je vindt ze onder meer in het assortiment van De Groene Cup.
PLUS Je kunt ze zo’n 4 tot 6 uur inhouden. Met één sponsje kun je 4 tot 6 maanden doen. Omdat je ze inwendig draagt zie en voel je ze niet.
MIN Doordat het een natuurproduct is, kunnen zeesponsjes zandkorrels en dergelijke bevatten. Het absorptievermogen is niet optimaal en de hygiëne laat soms te wensen over omdat je ze alleen met water wast.

Panty liners

Panty liners are actually intended to prevent vaginal discharge. However, they can also be used if you think you’re about to get your period. Or if it’s almost over, but you’re still losing some drops.
PROS They’re small and thin. You hardly feel them. The adhesive strip keeps them in place.
CONS You have to throw them away, so panty liners are harmful to the environment. If you wear them every day, they can cause skin irritation. Vulvas need to be able to breathe.

Menstrual cups

They can sometimes look a bit intimidating, those cups made of medical silicone. But if you fold them properly (there ’s more than one technique), inserting them is easy. There are plenty of brands, sizes and colours.
PROS You can keep them in for a relatively long time (up to 12 hours). Because the menstrual blood isn’t exposed to oxygen, odours are prevented. Because you can reuse them, they’re much friendlier for the environment and your budget. You get to know your body and can monitor your health better because you can see how much blood you are losing. They don’t absorb the fluid, but instead collect it, which means they don’t dry out the vagina.
CONS Determining the size isn’t easy with some brands. You shouldn’t be too prudish. Removing a very full cup is a mess if you aren’t experienced. Especially in a public toilet with a shared sink. Also: pay attention to the quality. There’s a lot of cheap junk on the market.

Menstrual pads

Anatomically shaped, super thin, with or without side wings, for the day or for the night, with or without perfume, regular or organic cotton: the choice is endless.
PROS There’s an ideal pad for every possible situation. The adhesive strip keeps it in place. Modern menstrual pads are wafer-thin, virtually invisible and have an enormous absorption capacity. More and more attention is being paid to sustainability, and nowadays regular brands also contain less plastic.
CONS You have to throw the pad away after use, which makes menstrual pads harmful to the environment. The plastic layer on the bottom can create a sultry climate that can promote infections. You have to change them regularly, preferably every 4 hours. Or immediately when you get up in the morning after 8 hours of sleep.

Menstrual discs

This variation on the menstrual cup looks a bit like a pessary. However, that was a contraceptive and the disc is intended as a menstrual product.
PROS The advantages are the same as those of the menstrual cup. With a bonus: because you insert a menstrual disc higher – against the cervix – it leaves your vagina free. So you can have penis-in-vagina sex with them. Although it’s smart to empty the disc first. Unlike a menstrual cup, you don’t have to break the vacuum to remove it.
CONS Since you have to put your fingers in your vagina if you want to get the disc in place properly, you should not be too prudish.

Disposable menstrual cups

There are also menstrual cups for single use. They resemble a reusable menstrual disc in terms of design, although the material is a bit creaky and less soft.
PROS A disposable menstrual cup is easier to insert than a normal menstrual cup. They also have the bonus that you can keep them in during penis-in-vagina sex.
CONS A disadvantage is that they’re relatively expensive for a disposable product. The fact that you throw them away after use, makes them harmful to the environment.

Tampliner

This innovative menstrual product combines a tampon with a kind of panty liner and labia pad. When you insert the tampon, your finger is protected by something that most resembles the finger of a latex glove. The accompanying pad, aka the mini liner, disappears between your vulva lips or labia.
PROS The Tampliner was developed by a gynaecologist and is made of organic cotton, among other things. When you remove the tampon, it disappears into the biodegradable applicator cover.
CONS It’s a disposable product. For the time being, you can only buy them in the British webshop.

Period underwear 

Underwear with a moisture-absorbing gusset is becoming increasingly popular. Logically, manufacturers of disposable products are now also entering this market. You see period underwear in all colours and variations: shorts, hip briefs and thongs. There’s even pants especially for teenagers and special versions for sports and swimming. They aren’t new though: as early as 1926, rubber-coated menstrual briefs for the night were advertised. These showed a surprising number of similarities to diaper briefs from that time…
PROS Their styling doesn’t reveal the secret weapon: a gusset that can absorb 2 to 6 tablespoons of moisture. You can choose from different models, for light, medium and heavy days. Combining them with other period products is possible, but not necessary. The purchase price is also reasonable if you consider how long you can use them for.
CONS You have to wash them? But hopefully you do that with your regular underwear as well.

Disposable tampons

Mini, normal or super. With or without applicator. The white sticks come in all shapes and sizes. They are made of synthetic material (rayon) or organically certified cotton. The absorption level is indicated on the packaging by means of drops. This has nothing to do with the size of your vagina, but refers to the amount of blood you lose. You can keep them in for a maximum of 8 hours.
PROS Because you wear them internally, you don’t see them. Apart from the string. They offer optimal freedom of movement. Because the menstrual blood isn’t exposed to oxygen, odours are prevented. But that applies to all internal products.
CONS You have to throw the product away after use. Tampons are therefore harmful to the environment. Tampons with an applicator create even more waste; whether the applicator is made of plastic or cardboard, in both cases you use more (packaging) material. Because tampons absorb blood instead of collecting it, they can irritate your vagina.

Sponges

Sauna tampon, soft tampon, sex tampon, stringless tampon, tampon sponge; they’re all different names for the same product. Sponges are made of flexible, absorbent foam material (such as polyurethane). You wear them internally and can keep them in for up to 8 hours.
PROS Because you wear them internally and the string is missing, you don’t see or feel them. Ideal for sports, sauna visits or making love (sponges were invented in the sex industry).
CONS Sponges are more expensive than regular tampons. After use, you throw them away (although there are people who boil and reuse them). Because the string is missing, removing them is more difficult than with a normal tampon.

Washable pads

Washable pads come in all shapes and sizes and with the craziest designs. The pads are usually provided with a water-repellent layer to prevent leakage. You can keep the pad in place with press studs. It won’t come as a surprise that there are also washable panty liners and labial pads that you wear between your vulva lips to catch discharge. In some collections you’ll even find a complete starters kit.
PROS Because you reuse them, you only have to buy a supply once. That’s good for your budget and for the environment. If made of the right material (unbleached cotton), they’re free of toxic substances and bleaching agents. They’re super soft and generally cause less irritation than disposable pads.
CONS That you have to wash them? Because there is no adhesive strip, they can sometimes shift slightly. The absorbency level is less than that of disposable menstrual pads.

Washable tampons

You read it right. There are also washable tampons. These crocheted pieces of unbleached cotton with a string attached are available ready-made in various sizes, but you can also order a pattern and crochet them yourself. You roll them up and insert them as you normally would with a tampon.
PROS You only have to buy or make them once because you reuse them. That’s good for the budget and for the environment. If made of the right material (unbleached cotton) they’re free of toxic substances and bleaching agents.
CONS You have to wash them. The absorbency is much less than that of a regular tampon. The choice of material is important. If fibers remain in your vagina, it can cause infections.

Sea sponges

Sea sponges have been used to collect menstrual blood since ancient times. They are pieces of sponge animals: primitive, multicellular animals that live on the seabed.
PROS You can keep them in for about 4 to 6 hours. One sponge can last you 4 to 6 months. Because you wear them internally, you don’t see or feel them.
CONS Because they’re a natural product, sea sponges can contain grains of sand and such. The absorption capacity isn’t optimal and sometimes the hygiene isn’t either, seeing as you only wash them with water.
